Wednesday 28th August 2024. Yummy York
A planned visit to the city of York was on the cards for the Lads today, as per usual they would all meet up at Leeds railway station. But getting there this morning was proving somewhat of a problem for Derek, Glenn and Dave travelling from Wakefield, also John had a similar situation. Disruption to railway signaling systems for all trains heading via Leeds were being seriously affected, so it was a delayed start to their journey to York. Brian and Malcom would be the other group members travelling on the rearranged 11:16 train leaving Leeds, Colin and Mark have prior arrangements so will be missing from this trip.
It was almost midday when the lads arrived at platform 11 at York, with a so-called plan in their hands it was decided to have a lunch time meal first, so a brisk walk in search of Wheldrakes cafe now ensued only to be disappointed as we were told it was closed today, next option was a cafe close to the Magnificent Minster here in the city, which at this moment in time was rather crowded with visitors from all corners of the globe etc, along with the many locals enjoying what the city as to offer.
Fortunately the lads found themselves seated at a table in Bennett’s corner cafe after about just 5 minutes of waiting , brilliant. What followed was us all enjoying our choices of breakfast/ lunch time meals, yum yum yummy. We spent just short of an hour in this delightful cafe , the staff had been very helpful and friendly to say the least.
From here it was now down towards the river and the start of our intended walk along the riverside path towards Clifton Bridge a distance of just over a mile or so. It was feeling quite humid now as we walked along enjoying the riverside views etc, having lost a considerable amount of time earlier this morning due to the signaling problem at Leeds our intended visit to the Holgate Windmill had to be abandoned, so as we reached Clifton Bridge we now decided to cross over to the opposite bank of the river and now head back towards the city and the railway station, resting at various points along our way.
Eventually we reached the station at about 2:40pm. our return train to Leeds scheduled to depart at 15:08 so it was back to platform 11 and await it’s arrival, plenty of other passengers were also waiting for this train but the lads managed to get seats close by each other and reflect upon today’s adventure etc. This train arriving back at Leeds 15:40 so for John, Dave, Derek and Glenn it was a hurried exit in order to catch their homeward bound trains, for Malcom and Brian it was less of a hurry.
Looking back on today’s adventure the lads actually made the best of a delayed start , enjoying what they managed to achieve
Cheers Everyone
